Latest “Doctor Who” Trailer is All Kinds of Awesome

From the Doctor Who Trailer

Hold on…umm…just another second…okay…here goes…

Sorry, couldn’t contain my excitement.  I tried, I really did, but this latest trailer for the upcoming season of Doctor Who is just awesome.  Maybe too awesome.  Don’t believe me?  Check it out after the break.

The latest season (series?) of Doctor Who will feature Peter Capaldi as the twelfth reincarnation of everybody’s favorite Time Lord, and if this trailer is of any indication, it looks like redemption is the game he’s going to be playing.  The first thing you’ll probably notice is that Capaldi is quite a bit older than all of the recent Doctors, but it’s only fitting considering that the character is over 2000 years old.  We saw him take on the role ever-so-briefly in the last Christmas special episode, where he marveled at a new set of kidneys and apparently forget how to fly the TARDIS.

But this is old news.  Let’s break down the trailer a bit and see what we’re really in for.

  • Clara is still the companion, and she’s pretty cool.
In this trailer, she claims to “not know who the Doctor is anymore.”  This is normal–his personality changes every time he regenerates.  Rose Tyler had similar worries when Christopher Eccleston regenerated into David Tennant.
  • The Daleks are also back, to absolutely no one’s surprise.
“Life returns,” they say in the trailer.  I wonder what sort of mess they’re going to cause this time.
  • The Doctor is looking to fix his mistakes.
These mistakes are probably going to be Gallifrey related–in The Day of the Doctor, it is revealed that the alleged destruction of the Doctor’s home planet didn’t actually happen.  I’ve got ten bucks on a “let’s find Gallifrey!” story arc.
  • New aliens!
That borg-ish cyclops looks promising, as does the bug eyed monster.  There’s a full-on robot that sort of resembles a cyberman, and we already knew that they would be coming back.  It’s obvious that the budget for this show has been increased substantially (thanks in no small part to it’s surging international popularity).
  • Doctor Who into Darkness
Hey, they’re the Doctors words, not mine.  It’s doubtful that this show is going to lose it’s trademark humor, but I have a feeling that the dark tone introduced in the last season will be back in full force.
Yeah, I know, they found dinosaurs on a spaceship in episodes past, but come on–IT’S A @#$!@# $%^&^(* T-REX.

This is going to be so good, and. I. Can. Not. Wait.

Doctor Who premieres on August 23rd, and I will absolutely be recapping every single episode when the time comes.

Fun fact: This isn’t the first time Capaldi has been featured in Doctor Who–he had a role a Caucilius in The Fires of Pompeii.  He also played a role in an episode of the spin-off show Torchwood.

Fun Fact #2: Capaldi played a World Health Organization doctor in World War Z, and his character is credited as  “W.H.O. Doctor.”  It was just meant to be.
