Why You Should Care About Insurgent
Teens need their fill of sci-fi too, ya know
If the Divergent series is an apologetic riff on The Hunger Games, then at least it’s a decent looking one. YA stories are certainly not original–and Insurgent doesn’t look like it’s going to buck this trend in any way, shape or form. But hey, if you’re a kid, then you’ll probably lap this stuff up. Every movie can’t be Interstellar, after all.
Robert Schwentke is probably a better fit for this series than Neil Burger
Neil Burger (The Illusionist) is an inventive filmmaker with a flair for the unusual, but this series needs someone who’s a little more familiar with the “cut and dry” method. Enter Schwentke, the man behind Flightplan, Red and (shudder) R.I.P.D. Like Burger, his movies are all over the place, but he seems to work best with a thriller framework. And if there’s one thing that Insurgent needs (and that it’s predecessor didn’t have), it’s thrills.
Shailene Woodley is an impressive actress
Whether you love or hate the movies she’s been in thus far, there’s no denying the fact that Shailene Woodley’s got the chops for some some interesting roles in the future.
