Why You Should Care About Predestination

Though Predestination is slated for theatrical release on January 9, 2015 in the United States, it has already come out in Australia, and reviews so far have been strong. Predestination currently holds an 82% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the film’s performances (Sarah Snook as a standout) and the inventive storyline.

It’s a time travel movie in the vein of Looper and Timecrimes, emphasizing the paradoxical implications of this genre and running with them. This is always a good thing–time travel is, after all, a completely ridiculous idea, so it’s nice to see filmmakers embracing the ludicrous proposition of this particular sci-fi subcategory.

Predestination is based off of “–All You Zombies,” a short story by the late Robert A. Heinlein, an esteemed sci-fi writer whose material set the foundation for cult classics Starship Troopers and The Puppet Masters.

The Spierig Brothers are the guys behind Daybreakers (also starring Ethan Hawke), a pretty decent sci-fi/ horror outing.
