Birds of Prey

Review

After breaking things off with the Joker, criminal nuisance Harley Quinn finds herself exposed to a maelstrom of trouble and caught up in a hunt for a stolen diamond at the behest of one of Gotham’s most notorious crime bosses. There are other characters in play, but absolutely none of them have any staying power, exposing a major flaw that never gets resolved: while street-level mayhem is appreciated in contrast to the usual world-ending superhero fiction fare, the stakes are so incredibly low here that it becomes almost impossible to care about anyone. And even though nothing that happens feels consequential, by the end the entire thing feels like a fever dream, which would be forgivable if it didn’t constantly confuse goofiness with actual fun.
