The Assessment

Set in an unspecified but not-too-distant future bureaucracy where parenthood requires state approval, a couple must host a cold, methodical assessor in their home and prove themselves worthy of having a child. What begins as a minor inconvenience quickly curdles into something far more sinister as the literal nanny state pushes past boundaries once thought sacred. The world-building is immaculate and the cautionary-tale vibes are strong, but its thought-provoking mood and taut atmosphere are ultimately undermined by an exposition-heavy, oddly melodramatic third act that undercuts everything that came before it.
