The Primevals

Review

A team of university scientists set off on an expedition into Nepal in search of the Yeti, only to discover a hidden ancient land with prehistoric and otherworldly connections. A passion project from late stop-motion legend David Allen, completed and released posthumously using footage shot in 1994, this is a crackerjack adventure loaded with old-school charm and the work of a craftsman at the top of his game. As a modern release, it’s a niche offering: the acting is wooden, the dialogue is corny as hell, and the effects were already dated when the footage was shot. And yet there’s a timelessness here that makes it effortlessly watchable, hitting like a really good episode of Star Trek TOS or vintage Doctor Who.
